What did Picasso call his famous drawing of a dove?
His MASTER-PEACE!
Pablo Picasso (Spanish artist, 1881–1973) made some of his art to help people understand the world. His painting entitled Guernica, done in 1937, showed the horrors of war.
The stark, colorless painting was a visual lesson he tried to help teach us about the pain and suffering humans inflict on each other needlessly.

Artists have used art to help humanity take a look in the mirror to reveal themselves.

Artists have used art to help humankind take a look in the mirror to reveal themselves. The hope is that we can then see our faults, stop, and change ourselves going forward. His art, Guernica, was such a mirror. The full ugliness of human war was revealed.
But did we learn Guernica’s lesson?
In 1949, Picasso used art in a different way—to stir hope—the hope of humankind bringing their best selves. He was asked to design an image to represent the world peace movement. Doves have historically represented peace. So, Picasso made a beautiful, simple graphic line drawing of a dove that became the symbol for peace.
And yet. Here we are in 2023, with the same inhumane wars causing untold human suffering. Artists need to speak out again.
Let’s start with art teachers. Art teachers touch so many lives and lift up so many weary humans with the joy of creating. So I ask art teachers everywhere—let’s make Picasso proud. Let’s bring the world a newfound hope movement!

I am a graphic designer and art teacher, so I thoughtfully provided a copyright mark for your artwork right on the template. It belongs to you, so we want to show the world your dove but also protect your rights. Don’t forget to put your artist's signature under the frame box on the right side. This will help further cement your obvious copyright and identify you as the unique artist, deterring infringement of your art.
When you are done with your dove art, please use it everywhere you are able. Since you own the art, you are free to print posters, teeshirts, or anything your heart leads you to do as well. The frame graphic or text for the dove artwork is something I designed and meant to be copyright-free to you. I expect no money or compensation from this. The only goal is for all of us to come together to bring hope to the humans in our world through art. Especially the children, whom many of us love and teach each day.
I hope you will please use this as an art teaching lesson with your students as well!

We are not going to traumatize our students with this lesson. Choose your classes to share the lesson carefully. When I teach, I am very careful to only say and teach lessons appropriate for age levels. I understand how to craft my words to bring a positive message to even my very young students. Even with my older students, I try to emphasize the good we are trying to do in the world. Evil exists, but I focus on letting them know that good is greater than evil when we show up with love and conquer the hate. Picasso tried to help the cause of good with his two very different pieces of art. We can do that too.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
#ARTteachersforpeace is not a part of any political or religious organization or associated with the exact intentions and thoughts of the artist Pablo Picasso.
It is inspired by Picasso and other artists in our art history who have created meaningful art to visually communicate ideas to bring about change for the good in our world.
#ARTteachersforpeace is ONLY visual art representing the hope we have for humans to find ways to live in peace together despite our differences. Please feel free to say this if someone tries to drag you into a negative spin. Or you can just ignore it. I don’t know why people love to kick mud on things or get a thrill out of being trolls, but we are going to hold strong and rise above anything like that. Remember—we are art teachers! We help uplift the world!
Just so you know, 104 ART JOKES AND MORE (available on Amazon) is a book dedicated to all art teachers and the love for this amazing profession of hardworking humans. It’s my little love note to you. There are art humor moments to tie into art lessons in the book. Kids really need to smile right now, I included one of the jokes into the free art lesson download.
